POETS CORNER

JUNE 2008

"Failure is an opportunity to begin again more intelligemtly."--Henry Ford

Red, Red Rose
By
Robert Burns

O my luve is like a red, red rose,
That's newly sprung in June:
O my luve is like the melodie,
That's sweetly played in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry.

Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
And I will luve thee still my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only luve!
And fare thee weel a while!
And I will come again, my luve,
Tho' it were ten thousand mile.

DID YOU KNOW?

ALEXANDER POPE had a hunchback.

He made enough money from his writing at 30 to buy a house by the Thames River at Twickenham.

His best poem, The Rape of the Lock, written in heroic couplets, was based on a real life experience of a young man who cut off a lock of hair from the head of a young lady who resents his love.

Pope is the most frequently quoted English poet after Shakespeare.

The poet who was called "the wicked wasp of Twikenham" because he was a commoner, was coveted by poets and politicians.

Some of his quotes are as follows:

"To err is human, to forgive divine."

"A little learning is a dangerous thing."

"Hope springs eternal in the human breast."

"The proper study of mankind is man."

"Fools rush in where angels fear to thread."
